First Aid Courses


1st Aid

Aim

To establish a level of competence in basic life support and first aid skills, giving you the reassurance and confidence when it matters most.

Validity

24 months from date of the assessment.

Syllabus

1. Life Support: (using a live simulated unconscious patient, not a manikin) demonstrate:

  • Turning a patient from prone to supine
  • Opening the airway and checking for signs of life
  • The action for vomiting and blockages
  • The recovery position and aftercare

Using a suitable adult manikin, demonstrate the use of supplementary oxygen for the following:

  • Oxygen therapy
  • Mouth to mask with oxygen

Demonstrate and Explain management of a blocked airway for both conscious and unconscious:

  • Adult
  • Child
  • Infant

Obtain an airway on a suspected spinal injury patient using jaw thrust, and demonstrate CPR on a:

  • Adult manikin
  • Child manikin
  • Infant manikin

2. First Aid

Acting individually, initiate the appropriate procedures at an incident and provide the effective aftercare for one or two patients from a previously unknown simulated first aid situation. Answer 10 questions from the worksheets (First Aid and Resuscitation section) without referring to any notes. A mark of at least 8 is accepted as the minimum score permitted.

  • Complete the syllabus for the assessment (11hours GLH)
  • This award is delivered and assessed by a Trainer / Assessor
  • Minimum 4 Candidates & Maximum 12 Candidates per course

Cost: £149.00 pp. (includes 12 months SLSGB membership, insurance, certificate and administration fees).

First Responder

Course Units

·  Aquatic First Aid (Assessment)

·  Spinal Injury Management

·  Trauma and the pre-hospital environment

·  Supplementary Oxygen Administration

·  Automated External Defibrillation

Award Learning outcomes:

1. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills required in order to provide a first aid function to a water safety team for basic life support and basic first aid

2. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and competence for managing a suspected spinal injury

3. Demonstrate the skills and knowledge associated with rapid assessment, stabilisation and transfer of both the trauma victim and those suffering from medical emergency.

4. Demonstrate the skills and knowledge needed in order to administer supplementary oxygen to casualties.

5. Demonstrate how to use an AED safely alongside Aquatic First Aid Scenarios Assessment Process:

Learners will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods. These are inclusive of, but not limited to:

·  Observation

·  Oral Questioning

·  Practical demonstration

Typical format of delivery:

16 / 24 Guided learning Hours is only the minimum hours that must be delivered, if candidates require additional training then additional hours can be added on at the discretion of the Trainer Assessor.

Supporting Information:

·  This award will combine theory and practical activities

·  At the start of this course all candidates will be required to demonstrate CPR to the standards set out by SLSGB

·  Candidates who fail this test will not be permitted to continue the course and will not be entitled to a repayment of the course fee

Price is £275 pp which includes 12 months membership, assessment fee, administration fee training equipment & resources.

Oxygen Therapy

Oxygen and Pre- hospital environment

Aim:

To establish a level of competence inOxygen and Pre- hospital environment giving you the reassurance and confidence when it matters most.

Validity:

24 months from date of the assessment

Assessment

·  Complete the syllabus for the assessment (4 hours GLH)

·  This award is delivered and assessed by a Trainer / Assessor

·  Minimum 4 Candidates & Maximum 12 Candidates per course

Cost: £70.00 pp. (includes 12 months SLSGB membership, insurance, certificate and administration fees).

Learning Outcome:

  • Explain the considerations when administering first aid in a pre-hospital environment
  • Describe the principles of patient assessment
  • Describe the most common breathing difficulties and demonstrate airway management
  • Describe the recognition and initial care for trauma related injuries
  • Demonstrate and explain the different ways to administer oxygen
  • Explain the documentation you need to keep a record of when administering oxygen
  • Explain the safety precautions to consider when administering oxygen

Automated External Defibrillation

Automated External Defibrillation (AED)

Aim:

To establish a level of competence in Automated External Defibrillation (AED) giving you the reassurance and confidence when it matters most.

Validity:

24 months from date of the assessment

Assessment

·  Complete the syllabus for the assessment (4 hours GLH)

·  This award is delivered and assessed by a Trainer / Assessor

·  Minimum 4 Candidates & Maximum 12 Candidates per course

  • To understand why we need to use a defibrillator
  • Explain the purpose of early defibrillation
  • Demonstrate how to apply an AED to a manikin appropriately
  • Demonstrate the sequence of actions when using an AED in conjunction with CPR
  • Explain the safety considerations when using an AED
  • Explain how to safely store AED’s
  • Explain how to maintain your AED and suggested recommended accessories
